PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT PICNIC.

A successful picnic was held by the members of the Public "Works Department at Paekakariki, on Saturday last, about 90 from MangaoTe and Mangahao attending Although the morning gave little promise of satisfactory picnic weather the long-expected rain held off, and bright sun soon had every* one cheerful and sunburnt. Swimming enthusiasts had the time of their lives and rounders and crieket were played with plenty of gusto by all. In the afternoon a sports meeting wa9 held. The following is a list of the successful competitors:— Married Ladies' Race.—Mrs. Blackwood 1, Mrs. Martin 2, Mrs. Roberts 3. Single Ladies' Race. —Miss H. Roes 1, Miss M. Gagliardi 2, Miss I. Astwood 3. Girls, under five.—Miss Goldsmith 1, Miss Bass 2, Miss Martin 3. Boys', under ten.—G. Exton 1, S. Astwood 2, R. Martin 3. Boys' under fifteen.—G. Exton 1, S. Astwood 2, G. Owen 3. Consolation Girls' D. Exton 1, Miss I. Astwood 2, Miss E. MeConncll 3. Girls' Under Fifteen. —Miss M. Exton 1, Miss Robinson 2, Miss N. Burgis 3. Single Men's Race. —H. Symons 1, A. Breen 2, D. Jamieson 3. Married Men's Race. —J. Crawford 1, N. Martin 2, A. R. Blackwood 3. Chain Stepping. —J. Crawford 1, S. Collinge 2. In making the presentation of prizes Mr. Blackwood expressed the thanks of the committee to the trades people of Shannon who supplied trophies for competition and to all those who had helped make the day a success. The hope was expressed by many that the picnic would in future be an annual function.
