HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The County Engineer (Mr. W. Nj Anderson) reported as follows to the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday:— \ The weather during the period just ended, has been fine and all work throughout the County has progressed in a very satisfactory manner. Tokomaru Riding. There is nothing of importance to report on in this riding. The roads are in good order. No. 2 power grader has been at work grading on the main road, and is now working on the district roads. The metalling contract in the southern end of the riding has been completed. Last week I made an inspection of the woik bemg carried out on tne Ash-lea-Temukanui .tioad. Tire extended .one for completion expired on February Ist, lyJij", i.nd there is still a fair amouiu oi work to do. Thy metal is vc>j unsaasfaciory, and a large quantity win require napping and trimming before the road can be taken over from tho contractor. Re Mr. Craw's complaint about access to his property being damaged by Makeiua Drainage Board operations. Councillors Whyte, Barber and myself visited the locality during the period and there was serious cause for complaint. The Makerua Drainage Board have, during their operations of deepening the main drain, deposited the spoil on the road line leading to Mr. Craw's property. Although the top of the bank made by the Drainage Board has been slightly levelled to Mr. Craw's boundary, it has been left in a very rough and uneven state, and in wot weather, I understand, it is unsafe for traffic. I would recommend wherever banks have been erected on the road reserve, that they be formed to an even grade and 18 feet wide, which is our regulation formation wlV.th. Wirokino Rid ng.

Everything in this riding is in fair order. No. 1 power grader has been continuously at work in this riding during the period. Otarua road has been graded and the grader is now at work on flhe Piaik; t road. The alterations to the light bridge on the Muhunoa East road have been carried out.

A start was made at the beginning of the week with the formation work on the Ohau West road extension. Otaki Riding.

There is practically nothing to report in this riding. The roads are all in good order. The maintenance metalling in the southern lias been completed. Te Horo Hiding.

The maintenance metalling in this riding has been completed and the roads generally are in very fair order. A small grader has been at work on the main road almost continuously during the period. I have arranged to start work on overflow channel on Mr. Barber's property on Monday next. A start has been made with, the erection of new bridge on the Hautero Cross road.
