THE SHOW TAKINGS.

JUST ABOVE LAST YEAR SIDE SHOWS GRE4TLY INCREASE i i The financial stringency, unmistakably reflected in several directions '.his summer, particularly in the unusu- ; al amjunt of unemployment and in diminished totalizator investments at al! recent race meetings, has had its effect on the Levin Show, chiefly in regard to the gate takings and the receipts for guessing competitions. Nevertheless the revenue from the principal sources is. in the aggregate, above that of the previous show by 15s 2d. The amounts were made up in the two years as under:

One factor which alone Avould account j for the falling off in gate money is the increased number of members' tickets issued. This year there are 385 members on the. roll, as against 313 last year. Here, then, is an increase of 72 members, to each of whom is issued one member's and two ladies' tickets. As the sum total of these privileges covers the decrease in the first day's takings, and as the second day's gate money was within one shilling of People's Day last year, it may be assumed, that the attendance on both days was practically on a par with the 1926 show, which was. a record. Were it not for the general economic hold-up, which time will no doubt remedy, the public patronage of the fixture would have been well in advance of previous records. ' The season has turned out a capital one for production, and this will set off to some extent the losses sustained by farmers in the spring. As indicated by Parliamentary speakers at the Show yesterday, a more hopeful outlook has already dawned.
