JANUARY MEETING. L* y The monthly meeting, of the Horo* whenua County Council was held at the • County Chambers, Levin, on Saturday, The chairman (Cr. Monk) presided, and all the Councillors were present. Levin-Waikanae Road. 1 With reference to the request made j by the Council to the Main Highways 1 Board, on the visit of the latter to Le- - vin in December, that the Levin-Wai^ | kanae section of the Auckland-Welling* * ton (via Taranaki) highway bo declar* ! ed a Government road, Mr. R. H. P. i Ronayne (District Engineer, P.WJ)!). 1 1 wrote stating that, after consideration 1 of the circumstances, the Board regretted being unable to accede to the request. r The chairman said that the Couuoil requested the Board to consider the matter of giving a higher subsidy for thS Levin- Waikanae road. They did not ask for it to be mads a Government road. . ‘ The letter was received. * t Ohau Railway Crossing. The district engineer of railways,' Wanganui, wrote stating that it had ; been suggested that the cross-arm-notice-board at the level crossing just* south of Ohau (at 55 miles 34 chains), be shifted out two feet towards the * road, as it was partially hidden by a transformer pole. The chairman stated that this matter was raised by a man who ran into the express a few weeks ago. A man who ■ did not see the train would not see the notice, and he (the chairman) did not think there was anything in the complaint. The crossing was reckoned a safe one. On the motion of Cr. Ryder, the engineer was instructed to inspect the locality and report to the Council. Rahul Factory. v.| A letter was received from the Wellington City Corportion Milk Department in reference to its request to be'.jt allowed tb put a drainage pipe line across the road at Rahui factory, to replace the existing line. The contract had not yet been let, but was expected to be entered into in a'few days, after which the contractor would be referred to the County engineer.—The matter 1 was referred to Cr. Ryder and' the engineer. • Supply of Metal. Mr. E. R. Gawler, of Te Horo, wrote - stating that he understood that the Council was putting a crusher plant on £ Mr. V. Cottle’s property at Hautere,... and as he had a 25-acre section with . plenty of stones on it, adjoining Mr. Cottle’s property, he would be pleased ; to let the Council have the stones.— lt was decided to thank Mr. Gawler for. his offer, and to make suitable arrange- ( ments for the closing of gates on tho property. ■ Waimea Sub-Division. Mpssrs Morison, Smith and Morison, - solicitors, Wellington, wrote asking the . Council to accept dedication of a road made by Weggery Bros, at Waikanae in a sub-division of their Waimea property.—The application was granted, the County engineer having reported - favourably on the work. Messrs Weggery Bros, -wrote with reference to the same road, asking for permission to retain the gates on it until they held a sale of the sections. At the same time they undertook to keep the whole in first-class condition and to remove the gates at the request of the Council at any time.—vThe* application was agreed to. Staff Picnic. An application was received from Mr. E. E. Hoskin, secretary of the picnic committee of the County employees, ' for a holiday to be granted on Saturday, January 29th, the occasion of annual picnic, to be held at Manakau . beach. —Agreed to.
