WORK IN THE COUNTY.

THE MONTH’S OPERATIONS. ENGINEER’S REPORT. ’ The report of the Engineer (Mr. W. N. as presented to the Horovvhenua County Council and adopted on Saturday, is as under: — “Although the holidays have interfered somewhat. with the work since last, meeting, work generally throughout the County has been carried out in a very satisfactory manner. Tokomaru Riding. I have very little to report on in this Riding. All the roads are in very fair order. The metalling contract in the southern end of the Riding will be fim ished within the next few days. A grader has been at work on the main road on several occasions during the period. Wirokino Riding. . The roads in this Riding are also in fair repair. A considerable amount of grading work has been done throughout the Riding. The maintenance metalling in the southern end of the Riding has been completed. Another start has been made with the metalling of Waitarere Road. During the period,

a 24in concrete pipe culvert on the road leading to Mr. Kilsby's property, collapsed, and has been renewed. A 42in concrete pipe culvert has been put | in to replace small bridge at Mr. R. (McDonald's property,' Beach Road.. Otaki Riding.

I have practically nothing to report on in this Riding; everything is in very fair order. Maintenance metal is being put out on a number of roads. The main road between Manakau bridge and Otaki is a little rough in places, generally where formation work is being carried out. This will be attended to in the near future, when a crusher will be at work in the Waitohu pit. Te Horo Riding. The main road in this Riding is somewhat rough at present, owing to a large quantity of foundation metal having been put out in connection with highways construction work. However, a heavy roller is now working on this length, and the present surface will be improved, All the district roads are at present receiving attention in the way of maintenance metal. Re E. I\jerard’s complaint re gate aeross road leading to stud farm: This matter has been attended to, the gate having been removed. Rc dedication pf Waimea Road, Waimea Extension No. 2 (W. H. and V. Weggery): The chairman, Councillor Jensen and myself, visited and inspected this road before the holidays, and found that the work of forming, metalling, etc., had been carried out in a first-class manner and recommend that dedication now be accepted. Corrigan’s Bridge. . I have inspected carefully the plans and specifications of the above bridge and recommend the approval of same, with the exception that the whole of the work should be included ;in one contract.
