SPORTING NOTES.

The incident at Canterbury Park (N.S.W.) on November 27, when the youthful rider of Hiuchinbrook, pulled up with a round still to go under the mistaken idea that he had won the race, had a parallel at Castlemaine (Vic.) last week. Hiuchinbrook, sent after her field, caught them, but tired in the run home. The horse concerned at Casth'maine managed to win easily, despite the handicap. While the Back to Castlemaine Handicap, the principal event of the afternoon, was being decided, the rider of Screwbolt (C. Dobson),when j two lengths ahead of Alepua the first time past the. winning post, thinking that he had won the race, endeavoured to pull his mount up. To his amazement the vest of the field flashed past and went on ahead. In an instant tho rider realised that he had completed but half the distance, and he settled down to give chase. Amid great excitement he steadily lessened the gap between the leaders, and there were cheers when he drew ahead and flashed past the post with the most substantial winning margin of the day. He was an odd-s-on favourite for the race- ■<

The committee of the Wombat (»w South Wales) Jockey Club should consider itself lucky although it rained for its annual race meeting. This was insured against rain for £IOO, the conditions being that 20 points should be registered between 9 a.m. and noon. Afier raining heavily throughout ihe night there was a further fall of 22 points between the' hours mentioned, each point therefore being worth about £5 to the club. After midday the weather took up, the afternoon was fine, and the meeting was very successful, r.s there was a good attendance, and the club gets its €loo from the insurance company as well. * -
