SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship thi. Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Crs. Thwaites, Downesi, Richardson and Richards. Apologies were received from Crs. Spencer', Hyde and Hook. An application from W. Cochrane for a-'petrol bowser pump was granted. The Municipal Association of N.Z. advised that the conference pr delegates will be held at Palmerston North on 16th February and asking for names of delegates.—Held over to next meeting. The Mayor referred to the dangerous nature of the paddling pool in the Domain. The bottom had become slippery and it was impossible for children to walk about with safety in the water. —Resolved that a trial be made of cleaning the baths out with caustic soda. The Council resolved to keep the Borough horse lawn mower permanently at the Domain and; alterations are to be carried out to the present Domain buildings to house same. , The Borough foreman reported that on Monday, a lady motorist, on turning the Ballance Street corner, did not notice the silent policeman. The result was damage to both the car and "policeman." He suggested ' that it would be safer to have a silent "policeman" embedded in the ground, as' was done in larger towns. —It was resolved to obtain an opinion from the Council's solicitor, as'to the position of the Council in.the event of an accident, arising in connection with the 'policeman."
Cr. Richards made reference to the excessive speed of motorists passing through the Borough.—Resolved to ask the assistance of the Police Department in this matter.
Resolved to instruct the ranger not to impound stock from sunrise to sunset until further notice.
The Mayor, in speaking on the beautifying aspect of the Borough, said that vandalism was still taking place. He noticed last week girls climbing up the trees and breaking the limbs of the shrubs, in Plimmer Terrace. Although he talked to the culprits, the same state of affairs took place again in less than, three days. The only way to suppress this kind of destruction was a prosecution. —Resolved to have notice boards erected that persons found damaging shrubs will be prosecuted.
