SPEED OF SERVICE CARS
COMPLAINT BY AUTOMOBILE CLUB.
The speed at which service cars travel over the country roads on the outskirts of Wellington and through the district was referred, to at a meeting of the Wellington Automobile Club last night. The chairman, Mr F. W. Manton, remarked that the way that some of _the drivers of service cars negotiated the bends between Wellington and Palmerston created a danger, not only to themselves, but other users of the highway. A friend of his. who travelled in a service car between Levin and Waikanae a few days ago, told him that the distance of about 22 miles had been covered in 25 minutes, and that he never felt so thankful as when he alighted safely at the journey 's end. Mr 11. W. Lawrence stated that the speed of many vehicles through the Ngahauranga Gorge was a positive danger to men working there, and that lorlies" driven by employees of local bodies and power boards seemed the worst offenders. Mr A. L. Warburton thought that the club should place the position before tiie authorities. Next week large nu?nber of private cars would be using the highways, and, with service cars travelling at high speeds, accidents were likely to occur. ' It was decided to write to the local \ proprietors of service cars, the Public I Woi rks Department, and the local bodies j in the district, pointing out the speed ' at which service cars travelled.
