Ilr. Fahey, who for some months past has been acting as locum tcnens for Dr. Mackereth, returned to the South on Wednesday. Dr. Bell, of Wellington, has taken over Dr. Mackereth’s practice.

The meeting called for last evening at, the ■ Maoriland Theatre to-consider the question of erecting swimming' baths in Shannon, lapsed owing to the lack of interest on the part of the pub'lie, the only persons present being the convenors. Evidently the majority of residents do not-want swimming baths. This is regrettable as these facilities are essential in a progressive community. The “Chronicle” publishes an account of a former Levin boy, James Darkness, son of Mr C. I. Harkness, now of Waiuku, Auckland, who, by reason of having learnt to swim in the Levin public baths, was able to save a mate from drowning. One incident of this nature demonstrates the value of public baths and a knowledge of swimming.

A farewell social was tendered Messrs J. R. Moody and McKenzie, of the Public Works staff at Mangaore, they having been transferred. There was a large gathering of their Mangaore and Shannon friends in the staff “bach,” and a very pleasant, evening Avas spent. The evening was devoted to dancing interspersed Avith musical items given by Mrs Cron quest, Miss' Haekett and Messrs. Owen, Henry and Cronquest. -A “novelty dance” avus won by Miss Wliiteford and Mr E T. Moody. Several of those present emphasised the many good qualities of the departing guests, also expressing regret at their departure.

Last Wednesday Mr A. Gingell, of Marotiri, met Avith a serious accident Avhile Avorking at Poplar mill. Mr Gingel! was engaged in stripper feeding when the fingers of his right hand became caught in the beater bars of the stripper and Avere badly crushed. He .immediately received medical attention Unit it Avas found necessary to amputate the index, second and third fingers at the first joint.—Manawatu Herald.

“It is hoped that the Australian lady swimmers, .Misses Clare. Couldwell and Ettie Robertson, would be able to make a tour of the Dominion next February or March,” said the President of the. Nitrate of soda, or some closely allied substance, possibly saltpetre, lias been sold in Napier as sugar. It is reported that half a ton was so disposed of by one grocer, the mistake only becoming apparent after numerous complaints. The substances was purchased by the grocer from a wholesale merchant and sold in good faith'as sugar.

What is regarded as a record output for a single butter factory was credited by the Waharoa factory, the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, this month, stated the Auckland Star. This factory is believed to be the largest under one roof in the world. Its previous record for one day’s output was 812 boxes, this figure being reached one day during the season of 192223. This total was, however, exceeded on the 16th November, when the total butter manufactured amounted to 838 boxes, only two boxes short of 21 tons. This butter was made and packed during one day of nine hours, no special effort having been made to reach the record. Of the 838 boxps made on thL particular day, no less than 6GO, or 78.7 per cent., of the total wen\ classed as superfine. The balance was first grade.
