FOOTBALL CLUB’S BALL.
AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION.
T*e Shannon Football . Club’s ivindunp ball held in tty! Druids’ Hall on Friday evening, was without question, one of the most successful social functions of the season.. ; No effort had been spared to make the function-a success with the result that there was a splendid attendance, visitors being present from Palmerston, Levin, and the neighbouring district, including Messrs J. O’Connor, J. Casey and J. W. Rimmer, representing the Horowhenua Rugby District Council. The hall had been transformed for the occasion by a band of willing, workers, having Ueen prettily decorated with red and black streamers, interspersed with coloured elect':‘c bulbs, botli small and large, and with the lighting effects in charge of Mr Meddings, combined with the many coloured frocks worn by the ladies, the hall presented a very' gay effect. Mr G. F.eir.ming«rrt, assisted by Mr T. Kohika, carried c-ut the duties of M.C. most efficiently. Speights’ Orchestra supplied the music, extras being played by Misses M. Butler and M. Kerehona and Mr F. Jamieson. The supper arrangements - in charge of lady supporters of the club was all ihat could be desired.
Prior to the supper-adjournment opportunity was taken to present the cup to the juniors won'by by them* as runners up in their competition, also the medals won by Messrs C. Hunt and M. iHakaraia, which had been donated by Messrs William and 11. Murdoch for the: best back and forward player in the senior team.
Mr J. O’Connor, president of the Horowhenua Rugby District, Council, in presenting the cup to Mr P. Morgan, captain of the junior team, congratulated them as l miners up in the junior competition. He said the Club won the cup in 1914 and held it during the war period, winning the cup again two years ago,'which he thought was a creditable record- He pointed out that up to the present the seniors had never won the cup.
Mr Casey, secretary of the Council, presented the medals to the successful players, congratulating them on their excellent play during the season, both as representatives of the province and of the Club, stating that Shannon could be proud of such fine representatives in the football field. He considered Marsh one of the best scoring men in the Union. thanked both men for what they had' done in the field for the Union.
The treasurer of the Council, Mr J. W. Rimmer, in giving an outline of the finances of the Union, stated that when jthe season commenced they ivere £IOO in dcdjt, but at the end they had a credit balance of over £IOO, exclusive of insurance money, which amounted to £55. He thanked the Shannon men who had represented tire district, as they had helped considerably to bring about this satisfactory financial condition of the Union.
It was stated'by Mr Casey that owing to the state of the finances last season all representative matches) were played m Levin, .but he assured those preser.t that next season one representative game, probably Horowhenua v. Ma .watu, would be played at .Shannon and possibly another represer.tativ i .fixture. He recognised Shan no - * was m titled to all the support the Ui - ion’ could give them.
