CR. CURRAN RESIGNS.

When the question of grazing stock en the Borough roads was being dealt with at the last meeting of the Borough Council Cr. Richardson accused Or. Curran of grazing a horse on the road. The latter sternly denied the charge. In doing so, he told Cr. Richardson he was telling an untruth, and that he was a liar. The sequel to this was at Tuesday evening's meeting, when Cr. (Jurran addressing those present said he wished to apologise to Cr. Richardson for using the words/ At the same time he would like to point out the circumstances that had brought Cr. Richardson's accusation about. On a certain Sunday; he had arranged to leave by car for Levin at 2 p.m. and having promised to loan a saddled horse to a young fellow who was to call for it before he I left for Levin, he had got it ready and j was waiting for .the boy out on the road, and as was only natural the horse nibbled the grass on the side of the road for about five minutes. Ho had brought the horse out of a ( paddock where the grass was up to its knees. Continuing, he said, . when a paltry change like this is mad,e against a councillor by one of His fellow-coun-cillors, it is time for the councillor so charged to hand in his resignation. Cr. Curran followed up this remark by handing his written resignation to the Mayor'. . Cr. Richardson in accepting Cr. Curran's apology, said the statement that the latter grazed a horse on the road had, been told him by a young fellow. Cr. Curran: "You should make sure of your facts." : • Cr. Richardson went on to say that j lie agreed the whole business from start to finish was paltry. The trouble had originated from a joke played by some men in the town who had nothing else to do, when they informed about him grazing his cows on the road. The matter, so far as he was concerned, was. finished with. . ,

The. Mayor, in addressing Cr: Curran, said he admired the spirit shown by him in apologising to Cr. Richardson, but •he would like him, to reconsider his decision to resign from the Council. Cr. Curran: '' Anything I say at the Council table I mean.'" "When any .councillor brings such a paltry charge I am going to get out of it." Cr. Thwaites said he was not present at the meeting. Evidently things were said in the heat of the moment whieh would have been best; left unsaid. He' said he would support the ■ Mayor in his request to Cr. Curran to reconsider his decision. Replying to Cr. Thwaites, Cr. Curran said his decision was final. The Mayor said it was a great pity that trouble of this kind should be brought about ,by statements made by the man on the streets. The Town Clerk, addressing Ci\ Curran, asked if he would be prepared to hold over his resignation for a fortnight, as by that time the vacancies already created on the Council should be filled, thus enabling the Council business to be carried on Cr. Curran: Certainly. I will not see the Council business held up.
