MAORILAND THEATRE.
CHUCKLES GALORE .IN “FIRST YEAR.” “The First Year” which is showing at the Local theatre on Saturday, is a story filled with chuckles from the 'first flash to the last, and one in which the characters move naturally through every sequence. Tommy Tucker, the bashful but successful suitor i 3 typical and Dick Loring, the bated but breezy rival with his boastful mannerisms, can be found in every community. . It is a Fox Films version of John Golden’s famous stage play, written by Frank Craven. The situations are original and very real; things that might happen to anyone. The action moves swiftly from one laughable predicament to the next, picking up enough pathos along the route to place the play above the level of ordinary comedy. Kathryn Perry and Matt Moore head the. cast. ALL STAR CAST IN “STILL ALARM.” Dick Fay, fireman, and his charming young wife, Lucy, have as a boarder, Perry Dunn, ward politician and man-about-town. The drudgery of the little home is beginning to tell on Lucy, but she conceals it from her husband. Perry observes it and begins to act accordingly. Pretending to be Dick’s friend, he starts undermining his wife’s love. On the third anniversary, of Dick and Lucy’s wedding Perry brings her a bouquet in which is concealed a valuable gift. Lucy accepts the flowers but refuses to accept the jewelry. Dick returns home with his present —a cheap little picture. While the three are at supper, Dick is called to duty b ya tenement fire. During his absence Perry prevails upon Lucy to desert her husband. The two leave together. In the meantime at the fire Dick has rescued a mother and baby. The xvoiQ&n • dies and Dick adopts the baby. Dick and Andy Todd, another fireman, arrive home with the baby only to find Lucy gone. Eighteen years have, passed and the baby, known at Drina Fay, raised by Dick, 'Andy and Mrs Maloney, has grown into ail attractive girl, • with flapper tendencies. Dick is now battalion chief, Andy a lieutenant. Tom Brand, young fireman is in love with Drinai, but worried ’by her apparent longing for a gay life. Drina loves clothes and lias a desire for the stage. Maisie, a friend, takes her to a fashionable modiste shop where she is eniployas a mannikin by Madame Celeste. Perrv Dunn, olded and craftier, is m terested in the shop and is smitten with the girlish charms of Drina. One night, a great fire breaks out m the fashionable apart-met house building in which the shop is located. -Among the fire companies responding to the alarm are those commanded by Dick Fay.. Andy Todds’ company and Tom Brand’s are put too.
