HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
OCTOBER MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council took place on Saturday. Mr. G. A. Monk, County chairman, presided, and there were aiso present Crs. Jensen, Catley, McLeavey, Kilsby, Bryant, Ryder, Wliyte, and Barber. '.; Buckley Drainage Board. A .letter from the Department of Internal Affairs enclosed an extract from the NIZ. Gazette, dated September 30th. containing an Order-in-Couneil adding - to the Buckley Drainage District the area recommended by the Commission for inclusion! The Unemployed. The -Government v Employment Bureau, Palmerston North, asked that in view of the continued unemployment throughout this district all persons requiring laDour should make application to the Department. Due care would be taken in the selection of suitable men. The chairman said that the Main Highways scheme in the Horowhenua had relieved a position that might have been a good deal more serious. "The letter was received. Infectious Diseases. The Sanitary Inspector reported that the following cases of infectious diseases had been notified, and received attention: Scarlet fever 2, pneumonic influenza 10, diphtheria 4, typhoid fever 1, tubercolosis 1. The report was laid upon the table for perusal. ' Waikawa South. Road. .; It was resolved, on the. motion of Cr. Ryder, seconded by Cr. Bryant, that the necessary steps be taken to raise a loan of £I4OO to construct and metal an extension to the Waikawa South Road, as requested ( by Mr. P. Simcox and others.- ; 'Employment Conditions. The Council went into committee to ' consider the conditions recommended ■bv the Works Committee for the employment of the permanent road staff. After discussion the recommendations were referred back to the Works Committee to bring down recommendations covering the whole of, the outside staff. Works Committee's Report. The Works Committee reported:— Mr. G. Sievers, water race flooding. — This matter has been referred to the Councillors for the Riding and the engineer for investigation and report to this meeting. r -■ Levin Borough Council, bitumen work, Mako Mako Road.-—Referred to the Councillors for the Riding for report to the next meeting of the Committee. Your Commit toe" have instructed the engineer to inspect and report to them on" the work curried out by the Makerua Drainage Board at the' Kara Creek <A\ the western side of the railway line.
The engineer reported: — Ohaki (Biding. —Evorythhrg in this Riding is in verv fair order. The district roads are in good repair and the main road is fair, although a quantity of maintenance metal will no required shortly. This metal will be put on when the crusher, at present, at Waikanac, is available. No. 1 grader has been at work oir the main road in this Riding. I have given instructions for repairs to be put in hand on the Waikawa Beach Road extension. ,
Te Horo Riding.—l have very little to report on in this Riding. The district roads are in good order and the main, roads are much improved. A power grader is at present at work in the northern end of the Riding, and a small grader is at work in the southern end. Whenever the culvert gang has completed work on the main road, it will commence work in repairing weak spots on the Hautere water race system. This should be within the next few days.
Re Te Horo Drainage.—The draft copv of agreement has been sent forward for the approval of those persons interested, and work will be commenced whenever agreement is signed. The two new power graders came to hand this week. One is at present at. work in the Wirokino Riding and the other in the Te Horo Siding. Ranger's report. —This month I have impounded 45 hjead of wandering stock. Re complaint from Otaki re horses, I have been down three times at night and have not been able to find anything on the toad.
