THE SHANNON BRIDGE.

NEW APPROACH CRITICISED. At Saturday's meeting of the Horowhenua County Council, Cr. Barber asked if there was anything further to report in regard to the Shannon bridge and as to whether the approach had been fixed. The chairman said the route went from the present small bridge on the Shannon-Foxton road straight to the new bridge site. Cr. Barber hoped that was not final. The Chairman That is definite. Mr I Furkert decided on it before he went away. Cr. Barber said he noticed Mr Furkert. had seen some river protection works in America and had been expressing, his views thereon. The speaker jhoped the work would not be gone on with without reconsideration of the route. The Shannon road and that bridge had been under water repeatedly lately up to a depth of three feet, and if they had to raise a mile of road approximately three feet it would be very costly. The chairman explained that the route had been declared a main highway.

Cr. Barber: Did we accept that? The chairman said he thought they would be able to bring it in under the heading of a major deviation and the Highways Board would pay for it. He felt that tha County was not entitled to be saddled with that because they already had their road to the river.
