SHANNON TENNIS SEASON OPENS

The official opening of the Shannon Tennis Club’s season took place on their courts iii Vance street on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a laige number of members and their friends. The Club were fortunate in having a tine afternoon with the result that a most pleasant time was spent by those present, who included a number of visitors from the Mangaore Club. After- | noon, tea dispensed by the ladies was much appreciated. I The president (Mr E. T. Moody) said I lie was pleased to see such a good ! number of members and visitors present and he hoped they would have a good time. The past season had been a successful one. and although the number of games played away had beeii'few, the sport had been enjoyable. There is every probability of a Tennis Association being formed in Palmers- l ton North which will arrange matches between Clubs in the Manawatu Centre. This should prove a big help as then they would have set matches and know what was ahead of them. He would like to see more male players join up and lie asked the. married lady members to bring their husbands along. If they should happen to be bowlers, they could play tennis in the day and borvls of an eve'ningr The spirit of the Club last year, he stated, had been particularly good and if members played for the game and not for a win he felt sure the same good spirit Avould continue and a successful season Avould eventuate. He thanked the ladies for the assistance given by. them in providing refreshments Avhile at any social entertainments they had always been to the fore. He then called or. Mrs Laurvig, as the senior member, to play Ihe first ball, after which he declared the seasdn open.

Play-then comhicnced, all four courts being fully occupied for the remainder of the afternoon, the players spending a pleasant time. Mrs Cronquest and Miss. Sinclair Avill provide and dispense afternoon tea at the Courts on Wednesday next.
