MEXICAN PYRAMIDS
, A PRE-MAN CITY.
The discovery is reported of a pre-Mayan city within Aftcen of Comitan, 'in the State of Chiapas, and richer and more extensive than another ancient city also found cently by the International Scientific Exploration Expedition, whien left Mexico City .for the southern country six weeks ago. The newly-found city has a doz ®£ or more grand pyramids, faced with large blocks of cut stone, carefully fitted. On several of the pyramids were tall buildings apparently temples and palaces. The city gives evidence of having been a great religious centre, for wide caved streets lead through the centre to the central plaza, upon which face most of the pyramids and truncated elevations crowned with official buildings. Near the ruins are many smaller mounds, which undoubtedly formed the bases of stone buildings. Sculptured pillars similar to the early Mayan period, but more primitive, apparently indicate that the ci y flourished previous to the e^ rllc ® t known Mayan civilisation of Nort ern Guatemala, and tho famous Palenque reign of Mexico. The natives report a stone highway connecting the ruin with the city reported two weeks ago hidden in a tropical jungle. Other roads were reported crossing the district concerning the ruined cities with the unexplored, uiiworlced archaeological map of Mexico. The expedition purposes to follow the exploration of pre-Mayan culture, which take Mexican civilisation hundreds of years back in the Christian era. ’
