SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The above was held in the Council Chambers ion Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Crs. Curran, THwaites, Downes, Richardson, Hook, Watkins - and Roberts. A letter from the secretary of the Kairanga County Council in reference to the allotment. of heavy traffic fees was received. RIVER BOARD' COMMISSION. Advice was received that the date of the conference of representatives of local bodies to discuss the Mana-watu-Oroua River Board’s proposed scheme to straighten the Manawatu river has been definitely fixed for August' B4th at Palmerston North. Also that the Commission to deal with the matter will sit on August 30th.—It was resolved that the Gounoil’s representatives at the meeting of local bodies be instructed to confer with other local bodies with a view to appointing an engineer and solicitor to watch their interests when evidence is being taken at the Commission’s enquiry. Also that representatives have full power to act-. ENCLOSING A STREET. In regard to application' by Mrs Pratt to fence off a portion otf Nathan Terrace, the request was refused. A motion was carried that in future no permission be granted persons to fence on the borough roads. , A BRIDGE RFJMOiVED. Cr. Richardson stated that some , years ago the Horowhenua County Council had removed the bridge at the end of Nathan Terrace where this road joins the county. This bridge,, he said, was an important link with the Borough, as farmers bringing stock to the railway station along the side road from'Makerua now had to croiss the railway line twice. Also, here was always the danger of' the old bridge over the Otauru creek being washed away. About a year ago a petition bad been forwarded to the County Council asking that the bridge be put in order, but lie understood the matter was held over and was to be provided for. in his year’s estimates. The Mayor said that owing to the wet weather it had been impossible to make the road into the new rubbisjh tip next to Mr Richardson s property. Cr, Richardson reported that the Cemetery Committee had met at the cemetery and gone into the i matter of concreting more footpaths. They recommended concreting about nine chains of paths 6ft wide, also laying down ten chains of pipes for a water supply. He said the question was would the finance permit of them! doing both, if not, they would have to cut out the latter and do only the footpaths. It- was resolved that the grant be spent oil the footpaths. The Finance Committee will meet shortly and'possibly they may be able to arrange finance to have the water put on. THE DOMAIN. Cr. Richardson isaid there were several low places on the Domain where the water lies. He recommended that these be filled up with .send and rolled. He under-stood the l-'Ot-ball Club were willing to provide voluntary labour to spread the sand if it was placed on the ground. The Mayor agreed. that this required doing, but he thought the best results would be obtained if 'he v ork was done in the autumn, as at present the ground was in a bad stale.
