WOMAN BADLY FRIGHTENED.
A PORTMANTEAU IN BED. , LONDON, July 25. While Arnold McNichol and his wife were staying on a holiday, with a friend, Mrs Thrackray, Mrs McNichol clandestinely placed a portmanteau in Mrs Thackray’s ‘ bed. The latter thought it was a man, and, in her fright, fell downstairs, injuring her knee. She secured £292 damages against McNichol, who, as the law then stood, was held responsible for his wife’s action. A sequel is provided by the bankruptcy of McNichol, though the chief creditor, Mrs Thackray’s husband, claimed that the step had been taken to avoid payment the damages.
