Dancers are reminded of the social conducted under the auspices of Yen. Bede’s Ladies’ Guild to be held on Tuesday next. A pleasant evening is assured those who attend.

The Hospital dance to be held iu the Druids’ Hall this evening should prove an enjoyable one, as the committee of lades who have the arrangements in hand are sparing no? effort to assure patrons a good time. Mrs Butler’s orchestra will provide the music. The object of the dance is a deserving one, namely, to raise funds for comforts for the patients in the Palmerston North Hospital. It .s to be hoped the organisers will reap the reward their efforts deserve.

Constables Rlaiclde and Shannon arrested a Maori youth, John Taku Andrews at Buckley on Wednesday morning. He appeared before Mr N. H. Sinclair, J.P., -at the Police Court yesterday morning and was charged that, on July 21st- at Buckley, Shannon, he did steal a rifle, a watch, an overcoat, a pocket knife and two pairs of shoes, of . a total value of £ll 8s 6d, the property of Robert Victor Tudor Brewer. “What sort of check is there on benzine consumption,” asked Mr A. Boss at the meeting of the Horowhenua Power Board on Monday. Mr Boss said he thought a recording benzine pump should be installed, especially in vliew of the new system of bulk spirit. The engineer reported having been already in touch with various pump systems as to' cost, etc., and he intimated his intention to report at an early date. At/present the benzine was Issued : by tire storekeeper and booked to each vehicle taking it.

‘‘The cigarette smoker who partakes of the weed while in bed is a menace to the community,” was an observation made 'by Superintendent J. Williams at a fire inquiry at Wanganui. The Groner, Mr .T. S. Barton, S.M., agreed heartily with the Superintendent, and stated tliat once, while travelling on board ship he and another passenger were in the same cabin as a bed cigarette smoker. Ignoring protests, this man used to smoke in bed, and one morning Mr Barton woke up and found one of bis shoes completely burned by the butt of a cigarette. ‘‘Cigarette butts are more dangerous than lighted wax matches,” said the Coroner, “and I agree that the man who smokes in bed is a aource of nuisance to fire .brigades.”
