MOTOR SPEED LIMITS.
I. COUNTY COUNCIL IMPOSES !. RESTRICTIONS. The improvement of road surfacis { has led to the accentuation of the ’ speeding menace and It is quite evij dent to careful motorists as well as r to other users of the public highways ’ that, drastic control will be necessary , to render them safe from danger. At Saturday's meeting of the lloro- ) wlienuu, County Council, the Ohau. ’ School Committee drew the Council's 1 attention to- the speed at which motorists travelled past the inter sec »iun of tire main road and Muhunoa Read at Ohau. As many school' children had to cross the road at this point, there was at present a very grave danger unless measures Mere taken. The committee suggested the setting of a speed limit, displayed on a. notice hoard to he erected on the southern side of -the corner in question. The Works Committee reported as follows:—-On further consideration of speed limits and warning notices your Committee recommend that the speed limit - for motor vehicles passing through the Townships within the County he 20' miles per hour. With respect to bridges your Committee have to advise that Section 59 of the By-Laws prescribes that no driver of any motor shall attempt to cross any bridge upon any County Road when any vehicle or horseman is upon such bridge, at a greater speed than eight miles per hour. Your Committee further recommend that- regulation warning notices be erected in respect to speed through townships and at such places where schools are situated within the County. The Chairman (Cr. Monk) said the Department had framed regulations bearing on speed limits, but these had not been gazetted. These regulations provided that (a) the speed should not. exceed that indicated by any notice put up by any local body, anti (b) that the speed when passing a school when the children were coming out should not exceed ten miles an hour. When these regulations were adopted there would be not need to pass by-laws and it might he that the by-laws would conflict with the regulations. When they were gazetted all that would be necessary would be for a local body to erect notices !, fixing the speed. He suggested going on with the erection of the notices pending the gazetting-of the regulations. , < The -erection of the notices was . - authorised. ;
