W.E.A. SUBSIDY.

GRANTED by county council.

At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowlienua County Council, the Levin branch of the W.E.A. sought a continuance of the financial support given by the County Council; Gr. McLeavey said he understood that the movement was practically a school and that lectures were given to which anyone could go. He thought that those who wanted to attend should be prepared to pay for it and he therefore objected to the grant. The chairman said lie did not know whether Gr. McLeavey had ever attended any of the lectures. Cr. McLeavey: I have read about them. /The chairman said they had had some very fine lectures in Levin and he only regretted that he could not attend them. He considered the lectures must have been of great advantage, and were open to all classes. They were along educational lines and lie considered the Council was justified in paying a subsidy. This year they had had an especially fine course and he would not like to see the support dropped just at the moment. It was at first thought that the movement would be self-supparting, but that had not turned out just as was expected. Cir. McLeavey said he did not object to the lectures, but to the Council having, to pay for them. Cr. Ryder considered the 'need of the whole of the ratepayers and of the world, a-t, the present time was education and he Thought this moveemnt was in the right direction. He moved that the usual subsidy of £lO 10s be paid. Cr. Kilsby, seconded the motion, which was carried, Or. McLeavey dissenting. THE PLUNKEiT SOCIETY. The Levin Plunket Society solicited a donation towards its funds. Within the next few weeks the Society would he having a nurse resident in Levin, whose services would be available to all mothers, in the district. The chairman said he did not know of any Society in New Zealand that was doing better work than the Plunket Society. The Council had. voted £2 2s last year. He felt that it was hardly enough. Cr. McLeavey agreed with the chairman and moved that a grant of £5 5s be made, as the Society was doing good work. This was agreed to.
