BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

The Borough Council met in the

Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor <" .(Mr B. Butt); and Grs. Cuirran, Thwaites, Downee, Watkins, Richardson, Spencer. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr James Hallam stating 'that he wished to drain the surplus water away from his section in Stout Street. He asked permission to lay a drain pipe, under the footpath at the lower end of the section, to open into' the road drain at the .edge of the footpath in Stout Street—Granted. A number of quotations for 9-inch field pipes, lunflanged, 3 feet long, were dealt with toy the Road Committee, who accepted that of the Wellington Drain Pipe Co., viz., 129 at &s each, and the balance of 128 at 3s. These pipes are to be used for carrying the surface water along Plimmer Terrace.—The committee's action was confirmed.

The Shannon Football Club asking that the grass on the Domain foe cut, and'that a temporary fence be erected -between the cycle track and playing field to keep spectators back. —, The matter of-cutting the grass was left to the . Reserves Committee to deal with, in respect to the fence, the Council cannot see its way to erect same.

Erom the clerk, of the Kairanga County Council, stating that a conference will take place at Palmerston North on Wednesday, June 23rd, at 1 p.m. to consider the further apportionment of heavy traffic fees, and asking the Council to appoint representatives. —Cr. Curran, and the Tbwn Clerk were appointed with full power to act.

A permit was granted Dr. Mackereth to erect a motor garage in Venn Street.

From the Audit Department forwarding the audited balance sheet, which had been passed as correct.— The balance sheet was adopted, the Town Clerk receiving congratulations on its correctness. L. Richardson wrote drawing the Council's attention, to the fact. that Mr Wilkinson, sehr., had (blocked up the outlet of a drain which goes through the property which the writer occupies. A lot of water came down the drain from the blind creek and when it rains heavily itputs a chain of water over the place. Hte had noticed that at the last meeting of the Council that this matter was left to the Road Committee to inspect with power to act. Up to time of writing nothing has been done, and he wished the Council to again deal with the matter. The drain has run through the property for five years to the writer's knowledge and has had its outlet on the drain, which is actually on the Council boundary.—lt was decided that Messrs Wilkinson and Richardson be asked to meet Grs. Spencer and Curran on the site at 2 p.m. on Saturday, to try and come to a satisfactory arrangement to all parties. SUPPLY OF METAL. Only one tender was received for the supply of metal, which was considered too high, also being unsatisfactory as regards class of metal offered.

Mr B. Symes, of Sheehan Street, waited on the meeting and offered metal from the creek on hie property, which he proposed to put in a dump on the bank alongside. He offered to supply the metal -which is not to exceed 1J inches in size at 3s per yard, placed in a dump. the Mayor stated that he and Gr. Thwaites had inspected the metal and had found it quite, suitable for the Borough's requirem.ents. , It was, decided to accept iMr Symes' offer, the metal to be according to the Council's specifications. ,

On' Cr. Spencer's motion it was agreed to pay 2/3 per yard to anyone who will undertake to remove metal from the Borough's pit at the bottom of Sheehan Street and place same in ' a dump on the bank alongside. RUBBISH DUMP. The Town Clerk informed the meeting that Mr Mason, of Sheehan street, had notified him that he did uot intend going on with the proposed rubtosh dump on his property. Under the circumstances, he said, it would ■be necessary for the Council to make other arrangements. . Cr Spencer said that the late Mayor Mr Murdoch, had often recommended using the unformed road to the cemeterv as a dump. He had inspected this site and was of opinion that it the rubbish was doposi-ted piroperly and nine inches of soilplaced on top, would be satisfactory. He asked if the Council would be liable in the event at an accident-It was the opinion of some of the councillors that the Council would be liable. It was left to the Road Committee to make an inspection of the bridge. TOWN CLERK'S SALARY. Cr. Downws adced if anything was

going to he done that evening in respect to the Town Clerk's request at the previous meeting for an increase in salary, which had been held over until there was a full meeting of the Council.

The Mayor said that this was a matter for the Finance Committee to deal with and place before the Council.

On Cr. D'ownes motion the matter was left to the Finance Committee to deal with, who are to report to the next meeting of the Council.

SEWERAGE QUESTION. Cr. Thwaites, referring to the sewerage scheme for the Borough, said it was too Ibig a subject to go into that evening. With past schemes the chief difficulty had been with floods, but he had a proposition to place before the Council whereby the difficulty would be overcome by a holding chamber.. He proposed ■ that the matter be referred to the Sanitary Committee together* with the mover .to foring down a report. This was agreed to.
