MAORI CENSUS RETURNS.
HOROWHENUA STATISTICS. We are endebted to Mr B. Magee, enumerator for Hiorowhemm Count;,-, for further details of the recent census. Independent of boroughs, the Maori population in the County of Horowhenua now totals 848. males preponderating, the respective figures being 457 males and 391 females. Returns taken in the three boroughs situated within the Horowhenua census area show that Levin has 92 Maoris (equal number of males and females), Shannon has 21 (9 males and 12 females), while Otaßi's Maori residents total 275 in number (143 male and 132 female). As there were 46 Ma'diiis iuuiiUded in i the European .statistics, these will have to be added to ths other figures, 'thereby compiling a total Maori population, in the boroughs, Of 434. ' Therefore, the aggregate Maun population, inclusive of boroughs, <>f Horowhenua County is 688 males and 594 females, or 1282 in all. Thus, witu 10 473 Europeans and 1282 Maoris, the total population of the Horowhenua district amounts to 11,755 people.
