HEAVY TRAFFIC PROBLEM.
HOROWHENUA ROADS TO BE CLASSIFIED. WAITARERE ROAD IMPASSABLE. As a result of a discussion by the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday the County roade are to be immediately classified by the Engineer according to the weights of. traffic they are able to carry. The Council will then be able to absolutely prohibit loads beyond the capacity of the various roads in the County. The matter was brought'to a head by the reported condition of the Waitarere Road, which was recently completed after long delay owing to various causes. The. Engineer reported: "Waitarere Road has been very badly cut up by heavy flax carting and is now practically impassable iit the far end. Steps will have to be taken to prohibit such traffic on this road." Cr. Broadbelt considered it was a scandalous shame that the Waitarere road should be knocked about as soon as it was made. Or. Catley -also expressed disappointment at the treatment the Road had received. Cr. Harkness said he was very con cerned about the damage done to the road by heavy traffic. It was time the Council did something against wilful damage to the roads. He did not known who the user was in this case but the Council should notify him that he must immediately repair the damage done. The Council should take proceedings against the person responsible; : 'The Engineer: You can't get over the road with a car now. It is impassable. The Chairman said he had no objection to prosecuting the offenders. The Council should, however, have its roads classified as it had power to do. Many of the weaker roads were seriously menaced by heavy traffic and unless they were classified there was nothing to warn off the people engaged in heavy traffic. , On the chairman's motion, seconded by Cr. Jensen, it was resolved: "That the engineer's report be adopted, and that the engineer be instructed to expedite the classification of all roads,, with a view to having the classification gazetted and that heavy traffic be prohibited from using the Waitarere Road." : i . On the motion of Or. Harkness, seconded by Cr. Catley it was resolved: "That the owners of the lorries which damaged the Waitarere Road be advised that unless they repair, to Ihe County Engineer's satisfaction, the damage they recently did to the above road within four weeks from date, this council will immediately sue for damages."
