THE CENSUS.

SHANNON BOROUGH INCREASES. OTHER RETURNS NOT YET AVAILABLE. Since the census- was taken on the night of April 20th, the sub enumuraters have been busily, engaged in collecting returns for the .various districts and .boroughs. The district undec the control of the 'Postmaster, Levin, includes the whole, of the Horowherma County, stretching from the Waikanae River to Tokomaru, also the boroughs of Levin, Otalu and Shannon-. The first schedule to hand is that of the Shannon Borough, die figures for which are given below. This borough has shown an increase in •population of 05 since the census of 1921. Prior to taking tile (statistics, it was thought that owing to the decreased number of men being employed there, and in the vicinity, by the Public Works Department, the number would at- least remain stationary. The summaries of the Levin and Otaki Boroughs will probably be available by Monday or Tuesday next-, as these returns from the subenumerators have to be checked by the enumerator—an operation which takes not -a. little time to complete. In addition to these- the figures for -each riding in Horowhenua County have to be taken separately, and When completed will be included in the full tabulated report to he furnished later. Shannon has a total European population of 1108, of whom 562 are males and 546 -females, whilst, there are also- 21 natives (12 females and ’•< males) not, included in the foregoing total. In Shannon there are 252 dwellings, two building in course of erection, and seven dwelling which ttete not occupied on the night of the census, the owners being absent, lhe population at the census of 1921 tuts returned as 1013 .
