OPERATING THEATRE AT PALMERSTON.

IS NEW BLOCK NECESSARY? \ , .■■ . The Palmerstbu North Hospital Board spent a little time oil Thursday discussing the .question of whether a new theatre block, was preferable to making alterations to the present one. The Medical Superintendent' (Dr. L. Eraser), reported that at a meeting of the hospital surgical staff on 13th inst., the present difficulty of properly dealing with surgical work was" discussed and regret was expressed that the Board's original proposals regarding a new theatre block, should have be'en altered. There was no question that those concerned felt 'that money, spent in au attempt to remodel the existing .theatre block, would not be spent to advantage and would not solve the existing difficulty. Further, the physio-ther-apeutic department was quite inadequately accommodated, and the present theatre block could quite well be utilised for other purposes. In discussing the question, Mr. G. A. Monk remarked that the new wards and the nurse's home Were the most, urgent works. Accommodation must come first. Perhaps if next year proved that there was greater need for operating facilities then the work of a new theatre could be gone on with.. He would move that the matter be reopened at a later, date. M. J. K Hornblow urged that" the additional amount necessary for a new theatre might easily be included in the present estimate. Mr. ,T. A. Nash, thought the attention of the Minister should be drawn to the need for additional theatre accommodation. Mr. J, W. Bramwell considered that there was a tendaucy on the part of the medical profession to increase the number of operations, whereas the opposite should be their object. He did not favour the extra expenditure. Mr. Monk's motion was carried. .
