GERMAN GIFT TO FRANCE.
Some welcome signs of amity to Germany by French people were recorded recently. The Temps now prints without comment an account Of how a. German society, which bears the rather high-sounding title of the "International League of Women for the Maintenance of Peace and Liberty," has just made a decidedly graceful gesture to the town ,of Arras. In the war Arras suffered terribly from German bombardments, and among the damage was the destruction of trees ir» th<j boulevards and streets. A few days ago three women officials of the German League visited Arras and deposited 13,000 francs with "the inayor to be spent on replacing the missing trees. The first idea of the society, it was disclosed, was to present a public building to Arras, but the League's funds are not equal to its good intentions. The sum obtained for tree-, planting was raised by selling jewels belonging to members of the League.
