Shannon News FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1926.

Mr W. H. Phillips will toe the soloist at /the evening service of the Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Mrs W. H. Gunning, who lias bem undergoing treatment at Rotor-ua for some months, has returned home much improved in health. At the meeting of the Palmcrlston N. Hospital Board yesterday it wias de- ■ cided to increase the pay to nurses in the lower first four grades toy £lO per year each. Our local staitiomnaster, Mr G. Thomas, is now on his annual leave, which he will spend in the South Island. He is (being relieved toy Mr Jackson, of Wellington. The only nomination .received to date for the Mayoralty is that of Cr. E. Butt, who has been nominated by Messrs "William Murdoch and James W. Murray. Nominations close at noon on Wednesday next. To-morrow afternoon at a p.m. L.. Carmichael and Co., auctioneers, of Levin, will conduct a clearing/ sale of high-class furnishings and effects on account of Miss Hennessey, at her residence, Bryce Street, Shannon. During the week the railway department's electricians have been busy installing the electric lighit at the Shannon railway .siaition. It is expected everything will be in readiness for switching on the light on Saturday evening. Entries close on Saturday evening at 7 o'clock for all events at"the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Sports to be held on the Domain on Saturday, March 27th. Enquiries made yesterday show that entries are already coming to hand fromi outside clubs. If the local Club are favoured with a fine day they can with conft-' dence look forward to a record gathering. At the meeting of the Maker ua Drainage Board yesterday some inter- \ esting particulars were given of the amount of work done by the, No. 1 Dredge .on .the (Board's banking scheme. It was stated the dredge has worked for five years and four months during which time 3 miles of stop bank had toeen constructed with a total yardage of 1,399,000, which works out at an average of 100 culbic yards per hour.

Mi- F. Brown, of .the Public Works Department at Mangaore, has been granted 18 months leave of absence, during which time lie intends visiting the United States and Canada in the interests of the Public Works Department. Mrs Brown will accompany her husband on his trip abroad. During their residence at Mangaore they have made many friends in Shannon and all will wish them an enjoyable and successful trip.

Opportunity was taken by memibers of the Croquet Club during the progress oif their games on the local green on Wednesday afternoon to make presentations k/two of their most popular members—Mesda.mes Brown and Capes, who are leaving Shannon at an early date. Mrs Clayton, president of the Club, speaking on behalf of the members, referred to the valuable work by both 'ladies in coaching new members and the great interest they had evinced in the Club and as a token of recognition of their services Mrs Clayton presented Mrs Brown with a (beautiful copper vase and Mrs Capes with half a dozen stainless knives. Both ladies suitably returned thanks. During the afternoon target, golf and. French croquet competitions were held, Mrs White winning the two former and Mrs B. Spencer the latter,

A severe shock of earthquake was experienced in Shannon at 12.57 this morning. A pleasant, evening was spent in the schoolroom, Makerua, when about 150 people gathered to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs H. Brown, who have toeen residents ol Makerua for many years and who are leaving to take up their residence in Palmers-ton, North. The evening took the form of a social during which Mr A. Judd on behalf of the residents in presenting Mr and Mrs Brown with a large bronze ornament supporting a clock, and a silver cake.stand fitted with Doultonware, expressed the regret of the residents at their departure, referring to the high esteem in which they are held in the 'district and expressing the hope that in their new home they would be blessed with, health and happiness for many years to come. Mr Brown, in replying on behalf of himself >and Mrs Brown, said they would never forget the people of Makerua and the great kindness which had been shown to them during their residence in the district.
