THE COUNTRY TEACHER.

PROBLEM FOR EDUCATION BOARD. -, LACK OF AQCOiMMOtDATION. The question of accommodation for assistant teachers in the country districts was the subject of a good deal of discussion at the meeting of the Education Board pn Wednesday morning. The Education ■Department intimated that no satisfactory way out of the difficulty had presented itself so far. The Shannon district was the subject of discussion. Here, it was stated, there was need of action being taken regarding accommodation. Mr R. A. Wright, MP., said that in his opinion this was becoming a most serious problem. The girls who go into the country districts could not always 'be expected to fall into "' the ways of life in a farmer's house. The hours ,oif the farming people were very different iroin those of the teachers. Incidentally, the farmer's wife got up very early, and worked hard from early morning till late, at night: She did not want to ibe bothered with getting meals at hours which were not suitaibie to her. Mr Hlarkuess thought thai since the department built houses for caretakers why could they not build them for the teachers? In the case-of-Shannon accommodation was needed for several ladies. I Mr Stoneliouse said that while the scheme was a good one there was always the risk of several ladies not living in harmony. Also, if any of them had relatives in the district they would most likely want.to live with them. Mr London remarked that lady teachers, not being used to domestic work, might not take too kindly to having to do their own work. It was agreed that so ' far nothing definite could be arranged.
