BRITAIN’S NEWEST TORPEDO BOAT DESTROYER.

Considerable interest prevails in shipbuilding circles concerning the new torpedo boat destroyer H.M.S, “Amazon,” built at the Southampton Works of John I. Thorny croft and Co., Ltd., for the Admiralty, and much secrecy has been maintained regarding her design and dimensions. The vessel is one of two of the first torpedo boat destroyers • to be constructed for the British Navy since the War, both of which differ slightly and embody the experience gained during the War with this class of vessel. .

The wintry conditions prevailing at Southampton unfortunately prevented the launch of the vessel on the appointed day when she was christened H.M.S. “Amazon” hy Lady Chatfleld, the wife of the Third Sea Lord. The j launch was effected a few days, later ( and completion of the Vessel is now j proceeding. She is regarded as the most advanced type of torpedo boat destroyer over built for any Navy, and her forthcoming trials are being eagerly anticipated. • . ! The propelling machinery of H.M.S. “Amazon” consists of Browm-Gurtis turbines , using super-heated steam with Parson single-reduction gearing, and her boilers are of the very latest water tube type, ail constructed by Thoryncroft. H.M.S. “Teaser,” one of many torpedo boat destroyers built by them during the War, gave over 40 knots, the highest speed ever recorded during official trials of suich vessels, and it Is a matter of eager anticipation whether H.M.S. “Amazon” will reveal an equal or even greater speed than her war-time predecessor.
