The Ladies' Committee of tlie Veil. Bede's Chuiren are hording a street sale on Saturday next to raise funds for the General church Fund. There is the likelihood of a shortage in the Church assessment to the above Fund for the annual balance on tlie 31st March next. Church people are asked to kindly assist in forwarding provisions, etc. for the stall. ' At a meeting of the People's Picnic Committee held last night it was decided to make the haka and'poi competition New. Zealand Championships for which valuable shields will be held by the respective winners. To raise funds towards purchasing the shields it was decided to take iup subscriptions and'to hold street and jumble stalls, Maori concert; picture entertainments and a series of dances from now -on. A letter was received at the Shannon School Committee meeting on Wednesday evening from Mr Howard An drew asking the committee to use, their influence to have the morning train to Palmerston North speeded up or that its running be kept within, a reasonable time. At present abouit 50 children journeyed by it to the Palmerston North High and Technical Schools and owing to it continually running late .they were losing a lot of time from school.

Recently the Shannon Ghaniiber of Commerce wrote to the Masterton Chamber asking that body to co-o;per-"ate with them in an endeavour to have the unformed portion of the road between Shannon and E'ketahuna completed. At a meeting of the Masterton Chamber they decided; to support the proposal ."for improved communication but to get the opinion of the Public Works Department on the cost and practicability of the schemes. At present there is about seven miles of road to be formed to bring the two townships together.

Messrs Harkness and Atkins, members of the Wellington Education Board, and Mr Powell, Glerk of Works for the Board, visited the Shannon School yesterday. They were met by the Chairman (Mr 11. L. Tippler) ami some of the committee and several matters were discussed in connection with the school, viz., the purchase of additional land for increasing the playing area, tar sealing the drill ground and courts, find the position which has arisen in respect to the class room the Board notified was not to be used owing to it having been condemned. A,t Tuesday night's meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, t'.r Downes said he had a matter he would like to bring under the notice of the Council although he recognised they could hardly deal with it and thaa.wa.s in reference to the boat at the punt at the Shannon bridge. Fie said that according to the Act it was compulsory for at least one boat to be kept at a ferry. In this case a boat was there but there were no oars. Up to a fortnight ago there were two boats, but one had been taken away. At present those who have to use the boat paddled it across the river with long handled shovels or anything else they could And. Already there had been a narrow escape from an accident, and he contended that if this state of affairs was allowed to exist it would not be long before there Was a serious accident. He recommended that the Horowbenua County Council's attention be drawn, to tiro matter, as evidently they were not aware that there are rio oars for the boat. Tt was decided to carry out Cr. Downes' recommendation.
