SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
FEBRUARY MEETING. The above meeting was held in the\ schoolroom on Wednesday evening. Owing to, ii uu-nil>er of committeemen, being unable to attend on the usual night (Thursday) the meeting was held a night earlier. PrQS«nt--Mes-sns R. L .lippler (chairman), Blackwood, Phillip, Brown, Roberts," Brann, Watkins (secretary) and' White (headmaster). An apology for afosence was received from Mr J. V. Burns. CORRESPONDENCE. From Secretary Wellington Education Board informing the committee that the matter of bicycle shed roofing is receiving the attention of the Clerk of Works, also that the question of the playing field will he presented to the Board at its next meeting; that the committee's application for'a subsidy of £4O has been provisionally approved; that the tender of 15. Waghorh and Go. has been accepted for painting the inside of the main school, that the Board has accepted Air G. Elsmore's tender for tar sealing a portion of the playground; that the Department will contribute up to half cost towards the cost of installation of a septic tank at the school, the remaining half to be found in equal proportions by the Board and Committee.
Mr E. Aim has been appointed probationary c.ssistant as from Ist February, 1926. . v : From Miss V. E. Sinclair, Infant Mistress, suggesting that a sand heap ,jii provided for the lower infant deBesides being a source of amusement it could be utilised as a means of instruction in a pleasant »vay not only to the" juniors but even ilie senior classes in history, geography, -eto.v-The suggestion was not approved owing to sanitary ' reasons. , Re the extension of the School grounds the Secretary of the Board forwarded the following resolution carried by the Board: That the Committee be requested to endeavour to obtain a more reasonable quotation for land offered in Shannon; that a discussion of the matter with the Committee be referred to Messrs Atkins and Harkness and that the proposal be commended to the Government if a suitable price can be quoted. A tender to supply 50 yards of metal at the School at 11/6 per yard was received from 3. Bresnehan.— Accep- • ted. ' STANDARD 111 ROOM. The Chairman reported that since the Committee's special meeting held to discuss the position of Standard id room, Mr Cowles, the Board's Inspector, had visited the school, and after milking an inspection had stated that he was satisfied the classes could not be; arranged if the room was closed. Later he had advised by letter that he had found the room had oeen condemned only in the sense "that the floor space was not to be computed in counting the floor space. ' Mr Blackwood said he had always understood that the room bad been, condemned a. s not being sanitary and i other members were under the same i impression. _ I It was decided on the motion of Mr ! THE SCHOOL PICNIC TO BE HELD AT PMMMERTO-N. The question of holding the annual school picnic was discussed. It was pointed out that the sum of £IOO was allocated from the carnival fund towards the picnic fund. Of this amount £7l had been spent on a picnic two years ago, and £2* for a picnic and 1 spoils on Arbor Day leaving a balance in hand of approximately £7. Mr Roberts moved and Mr .Blackwood seconded that a picnic be held ! at Pliminerton, providing the public | will supply the necessary funds and i that subscription lists be circulated: This was carried and it was decided to hold the picnic on Friday, March 5Ui. A guarantee of £55 is required bv the Railway Department for a special ! train. It was estimated that the sura ' of £4O will be required to enable the cotumiUee to give each child under 15 vcars of age a trip to the seasside. HEADMASTER'S REPORT. Mr White, live headmaster, reported (hat the school closed for the Christmas vacation with a roll number of :;G6; of this number 39 children had withdrawn and 41 were admitted on tlie opening of the school. The average attendance last week was 325. The main cause of Ihe small average was the pour attendance on the; opening dav, when 0n1y'293 attended, sickness w-as also the cause of a number being absent while same were away from the district.
