SMOKE CONCERT AT MIRANUI.
On Monday evening of last week the Miranui Go-operaitive society celebrated their first anniversary with a smoke'concert which was held in the large dining room at the milL There was a large number of members present, also a number of visitors from Palmerston North and Shannon. . Mr S. Eagle, chairman of the committee, presided over the gathering. A most pleasant evening was spent with song -and story and the following toasts were honoured: — “The King,” ‘‘The Firm,” proposed by Mr Hemmiingisen, replied to by Mr H. A. Seifert; “The MiranUi Co-oper-ative Society," proposed lay Mr R. Priest, responded to by M-r. S. Eagle, during which he briefly touched upon the reasons for the formation of the Society, which mainly was to bring down the cost of living for its members. When the Society was formed they had been given two months to last but he said they were * still going strohg and he would make bold to state that at the end of ten years they would still be going. Their financial position was satisfactory and the success of the venture was largely due to their old friend, Mr McAnally, who he was sorry to say had just left the mill, and to their capable secretary, Mr Pedder, who had done splendid work in connection with the society. (Applause). The toast of “The Committee" was then proposed by Mr H. A Seifert and responded by Mr Cameron, the latter pointing out that even with the best committee they must have the co-operation of the members to obtain the best results and they had been fortunate in having such enthusiastic workers as the chairman (Mr S. Eagle) and Messrs McAnally and Pedder. In (proposing the toast of “Business Firms," with whom the society was doing business with, Mr Pedder referred to the cordial relations which existed between them. He thanked the officials of the Railway Department and the Post and Telegraph Department for their Royalty and courtesy to the Society. The toast was suitably replied to by Messrs Mason and Murray, who thanked the committee for asking them to attend the gathering, both wishing the society every success m the future' . Mr. Firth then proposed the toast, of the “Debating, Library, Football and Tennis Clubs,” to which Mr Gillespie suitably responded. During the evening songs were rendered by. Messrs McKegg, Hemmingsen, Cousins, Moore and Hook; violin solo Mr Mason; recitation, (Mr McKegg;, and a musical duet (mandolin and <nutar) by Messrs De Peppe and Zulian, Mr Williams, o Palmerston North, acting as accompanist, all of which was much appreciated.
