THE SHANNON PUNT.

MOTORISTS COMPLAIN. The Foxton Herald sajys:—Much. dissatisfaction is being expressed by those who are • compelled to use the piuht at the Shannon Bridge in order to cross the Mapawiatu river and reaah Shannon. The punt cannot be worked with a fresh in the river and similarly at low tide there is not sufficient water at that location to enable the punt to' reach the landing stages on either side of the, river. Consequently traffic on the FoxtanShannon road is held up for hours .on end. otae motorist, who had come to Foxton from Levin this morning and intended making his way back via Shannon, was informed on arraval at the punt at 9 a.m. that there was not sufficient water m the riveT to enable a crossing to be made and that "there might he enough by 4 o'clock this afternoon. He 4s thus compelled .to return to Foxton and go to Shannon via Koputaroa. He told our ryetfotatow that it would not be so had it some method Of notifying the travelling public that the punt was out of acttion was employed to save motorists and others geflng all the way out to the bridge to find out that they were unable to cross the river.
