MAYOR, DESPITE HER FATHER.
TIH'E only vote against a WOMAN. Miss Lucy Dales, the only woman ■member of the 'Dunstalble Town Council (England) accepted am. invitation to become the new mayor. The only member to vote against her was her father, Alderman J. T. Dales, who states that he wiill oppose her at the formal mayoral election. Alderman Dales, who was himself mayor six years ago, said in an interview: "I voted against my daughter out of sympathy for herself, as I consider that she has already -as much responsibility in business and at home as a normal woman can carry. I fear that her health would not stand the strain of the mayoralty. I would not be mayor again on any account." Miss Dales was returned at the head of the poll in her ward for the third time 'in six years. In her first year on the Council she acted as mayoress for her father, who is a widower. No woman has yet been both mayor and. mayoress of the same English borough.
