COUNTRY STOREKEEPER’S VISIT TO CITY.
■_— FELL ASLEEP IN CITY YARD. George Eruest Brazier (27 years of •age), who keeps a store in a country town, came to Wellington a little over a Week ago for the purpose of fixing up an insurance matter. A fire had broken out in his shop some time before, and* he visited the city in order to collect some money that was due. Instead of going back home immediately, however, he had a few drinks and finished up by falling asleep in the grounds surrounding the Women’s Hostel in Thompson Street. Here ho was arrested, and later charged with being found by night without lawful excuse in the yard, but in circumstances that did not disclose the intention of any other crime. Brazier presented a sorry plight in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when he faced Mr. E. Page, S.M., on the charge mentioned. “This man,” said Sub-Inspector Hollis, “was remanded for medical observation, but the gaol authorities report him to be all right. The hostel has laid several complaints with the police of late regarding men looking in the windows, but w 6 do not say that accused was there for that ‘purpose. He had been drinking an-I says he knows nothing about it.” Mr. A. S. Cousins, who appeared for accused, asked the Magistrate to extend leniency towards his client. “Ho has suffered enough »by being in gaol for a week,” Said counsel, “and had he not been drinking this would never have occurred. Besides, this charge is sure to become public property, ami that must hurt his business. I suggest that a fine would meet the case an-I that he be allowed to return to Parapa raumu.” Accused was lined £5, with costs. — Dominion.
