LEVIN’S SPEED KING.
SUCCESSES IN AUSTRALIA. The Sydney Referee- of December 9th contained an interesting account of the opening of the motor speeding at Maroutora, at which 50,000 people attended to share in' the thrills of the roaring road. It was here that Spencer Stratton, at one time well-known in the Levin 'district, placed two good victories to his credit, and in so doing impressed everyone by his fine riding. In the five miles scratch race for machines, over 350 c.c., Stratton covered the distance at over 93 miles an hour, ,and won by 100 yards. The handicap race, for all powers, was very exciting and a- remarkable contest. Starting from scratch the New Zealander took the lead after four laps and won by 50 yards. In the final race of the day Stratton again proved himself too good for ’the field, he winning the event at. an average speed of 86.7 miles an hour.
On December the 26th he met the winner of the Golden Helmet in a challenge race. The Golden Helmet carries with. i(t a prize of £lO per week, in addition to a prize of £3O. The trophy has to be ridden for each month, and it is self-evident that the contest- is always keen. No matter what the occasion, it is always pleasant to hear of New Zealanders, particularly those from this district, asserting themsel vies in other countries, and Mr Stratton is to be congratulated upon his outstanding success while riding in Australia.
