MUNICIPAL COMPLIMENTS.

COUNCIL AT SUPPER. At the conclusion of. the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Murdoch) inyited the comicillors, Town Clerk and Shannon News reporter to supper, whenhe took the" opportunity of wishing them all the compliments .of the. festive season. Cr. spencer thanked the Mayior on behalf of the councillors and in re- ; turning the ooimp!imen.t stated the Council had had a strentutoais year. A numiber of ideas had been set out by the Council and quite a number of these had been satisfactorily carried out.' He referred to the amount of good work the Mayor had done for the town and he .expressed the hope that he. would still be at the liead of the Council table next year. (Applause). The Mayor, in returning thanks, said little differences now and again cropped up among the councillors, but these could not be avoided by a body working on democratic lines, as without 'these •diiff'efrencfes they would get nowhere. If members were defeated they should always accept it like sports. He said he always had' the welfare of the people at heart. In the past many difficulties had been overcome and he felt sure the present and future Councils would always overborne any difficulties that might arise. He said he felt that his health was failing and he did not think he would stand again for the Mayoralty, tout he could as sure them he Wouto always have a deep interest in Shannon and he felt sure the town would become a good one. He referred to the great distribution of wealth from the flax industry, pointing out hqw the industry has been improved by the cultivation of flax, which was not, even thought of twent yyears ago. In conclusion he said it was his earnest wish and would give him the greatest of pleasure to see the town progress. . After similar compliments had been paid to the Town Clerk and News representative, Which were heartily reciprocated, a most, pleasurable little gathering terminated.
