IMPROVEMENTS TO MUNICIPAL BUILDING.
THE LOAN REJECTED
A poll of ratepayers was taken on Friday for the purpose of raising £7QO for renovating and making additions to the present Council Chambers. Much interest was. taken, a total Qf .141 votes, being recorded out of 220 ratepayers on the roll, which goes to show that nearly every Patepayyr in the Borough voted, as it is estimated there are nearly 30 per cent, absentees. On the only other occasion 4 on which a poll has been taken, viz., for the water loan, 82 ratepayers recorded their vote. The “poll closed at 7 p.m., the returning officer, Mr J. T, Bovis, announcing the result shortly after, which showed that the loan was rejected, 66 voting for and 75 against; informal nil. • Before bringing forward the proposal, the members o.f the. Council had devoted a lot .of time to the 1 matter and had gone thoroughly into it and with the exception of the. Mayor and Cr. Curran,, were unanimous that the scheme; was the best that could be put forward without further increasing the rates, as they contended that the office for letting, would have brought ‘ in sufficient revenue to cover interest and sinking fund. Evidently the majority of the ratepayers were" not of the same opinion. Now tlfat the scheme has been rejected it is to be hoped that the Council will not permit this matter to> drop, but will endeavour to: bring forward a scheme that will'meet the wishes ol tile ratepayers as thfcre is no denying the fact.that something has got to b done .in respect to the* present building, which f§; not- only unsanitary, .-but is-a real eyesore to the^ town: : ■ ■ ' k : ; . |
