On Tuesday last a conference was held at Makerua between Mr Bisley (District Engineer New Zealand Railways), Mr Beck (Assistant Engineer), Mr 'Anderson (Horowhenua County Council), and Messrs jickell anid Gilmom\ engineer to the Makerua Drainage b'.oard, and the mehibers oi' the Board, with a view to connecting up the Board's bank at the Kara Creek with the railway bank. The question was fully gone "into and if is understood an agreement was come to be tween the parties.
The final try-out prior to the official opening of the electric light installed on the Bowling Green was held on Wednesday evening. There was a large number of residents present, including between 30 and 40 ladies. When the lights were turned on, they lit up the surroundings and were equal" to daylight. The. bowlers present .could not resist having a roll up and games were soon in progress which were enjoyed under ideal conditions. The committee will meet in the course of a day or two and arrange for the official turning on of the light and a.n invitation will be extended to the public to attend.
On Tuesday evening last the euchre tournament of Yen.. Bede's Guild concluded. The points prizes of the season went to the following players:—Ladies: Miss Evelyn >Duvis with 77 points; Mrs Charles, who on the previous evening's play tied with the winner, hail second place with 72 points. The prize was a pair of frame in oils. Gentlemen: Mr G. Caldwell, with 80 points; prize, a solid" leather attache case; Mr A. Merwood had second place with 71) points, /and had previous to the evening's play, been leading by two points. The winners, for the final evening's play were ladies: First, Miss E. Davis: consolation, Mrs Hensman. Gentlemen: First, Mr G. Caldwell; consolation, Mr F. A. Wilson. The British and Foreign Bible Society's representative, Mrs Porter, addressed a meeting of interested friends in the Parish Hall on the afternoon of Thursday, the 15th inst. Mrs Porter, in her address, gave an interesting description! of the* work the .Society iiad carried out during the year, * one amazing fact being that the Bible had been issued in five hundred and seventy-two languages. Then she went on to report on the work done in New Zealand, and how at the annual meeting held in Wellington quite recently, the GovernorGeneral, in addressing the meeting, had voiced his. astonishment with the activity shown by the .Society in endeavouring that "every boy and girl should have a Bible in'their own tongue, while those responsible in New Zealand were' shutting out that privilege from our own children in the State Schools. The work of Mrs Ciirtrr as presiden! and secretary of the Shannon branch was also highly spoken of by Mrs Porter. The election of officers for the local branch resulted in the following (being chosen: President, Rev. A. J. Earn ell: vicepresidents, Uev. A. F. Stewart. Mrs A. T. Johnstone. Mrs Barber; secretary, Mrs Riddler; box secretary, Mrs MeCulloch; collectors, Mm Waring Taylor, Mrs MeCulloch, Miss Eva Ouarrie, Miss < Mona Ingley; for Mangaore, Mrs W. Mutton; for Tokomaru, Mrs Trefease.

At the meeting of the Palinerston i North Hospital Board held yesterday, Dr. Fairhurst, of Bay of islands, was unpointed nesident ivledicai Superintendent at the Hospital. Monday next, being Labour Day, a general holiday will be observed in Shannon. The principal attraction vocally will be the progressive pairs bowling tournament, which will commence at 8.30 a.m. and ail bowlers and intending bowlers are asked to make a point of 'being present. The consulting engineer to the liorowhenua Power Board (Mr T. B. Oven on) lias prepared a very instructive pamphlet giving a great many hints to consumers of electricity as to* care iu the handling of lighting and appliances, economical -use of current, replacing short-circuited fuses and general information. The paper was put before the Board this morning and was generally approved with one or two small amendments. Members thought the information given would be of great interest and value to the consumers and it was I ordered to be circulated amongst them by the meter reader.
