WAYWARD MODERN GIRL.

DONKEY STILL SURVIVES IN MAN. LONDON, October 9. The much discussed waywardness of the modern girl was approached from a new angle by Miss Lilian Faithful, formerly Principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, in an address before the Church congress. She declared parents did not know their children, because they themselves were invovled too much in outside pleasures. “The elders-must cultivate a better sense of proportion and cease to be bound by old-fash-ioned ideas. It is irritating to young people to have smoking regarded as a crime or modern dress’ as vulgar. We must not forget that dress in every age has been ridiculous. The Victorian Crinoline, tight waists and swishing skirts were no better than the short frocks of the present day. Paint and powder, however much they may be deplored, are not new. They Avero a general rule in by-gone ages. If \vq appeal to the best qualities in the modern girl in a nCAv Avay, she Avill respond.” An outspoken address on modern tendencies was given by Canon Woods who summarised present-day evils as being tpyified by the idle rich, who know no discipline, workmen who repudiate authentic arguments, dramatists, novelists and film producers who ha\ r e no sense of restraint,, pleasureseekers Avho do not know when to stop, football crowds who “boo” the referee, picnickers who defile the countryside, with their litter, and parents Avho not control their children. It was disquieting to observe the tremendous amount of stupidity and inuddle-haadedness among people. "Though the ape and tiger within us may have died, there is plenty of evidence that the donkey still survives,” he said.
