FACTION FIGHTS.
MIRED GUNMEN. U NDERWO RED Ql* Alt RETS. NEW YORK, August 20. A waiter was hurled from the ninth storey of an hotel by a, stage hypnotic! and his two assistants. . They had been holding a drunken i orgy after th ( < show', and the unfortu- ' nate man who waited on them at 1 table is now dying. 1 This incident has made the police ' realist' that Broadway and the ad.ia--1 cent streets of the theatrical district are infested with a horde of sinister characters and crooks of every description. .Detectives have been assigned to clear the streets, restaurants, and public places or these undesirables. 1 Meanwhile police headquarters is worried by reports of rival gangs in ; the city’s underworld arming for war. One gang, known as the Nearv Mob, has disagreed with the Diamond Moll. They have sworn vengeance on each other. J 1 is reported that the Diamonds have imported a group of Detroit; gunmen to help in. the fight. About six months ago the two Diamond brothers (“Joe” and “Whitie”) who gave the name to their mob, boarded an elevated rail-way platform with throe companions. Without uttering a word, they shot a paymaster, and took from him the bag in which be was carrying the factory workers’ wages. All liv 0 were caught and executed. Probably the underworld battles now occupying the attention of the police are a continuation of those which starled eighteen months ago. Kid Dropper was shot in a crowded street while talking to his girl. Shortly afterwards Kaplin, a rival gunman, also stopped an automatic bullet in public. Subsequent’ tc these incidents, what Die police called a gang war commenced. On throe consecutive nights continuous fusillades h rrorised the Tenderloin district. This ended only when Serbian Tony was convicted of the murder of Kid Dropper. Gangs change tlu-ir names as often as the individuals comprising them and so add to Hie difficulties of the police.
