SHANNON BRIDGE. A letter was received from Mr J. H. Hannah, district engineer, in reference to the Manawatu river bridge on the Shannon-FOixton highway, advising that the Main Highways Board regretted being unable to see its way clear to agree to incur the cost of a suspension bridge from the bank lo the end of the existing bridge across the Manawatu river. In the Board’s opinion the installation oif such a bridge would be a waste of money, ns was proved by the last flood. Received.
From F. H. Hudson, County Clerk, re Manawatu river bridge,' stating he had been directed by his Council to ascertain if the Borough Council would .be prepared to make a voluntary contribution towards the reconstruction of the bridge on the new site and that if the various local bodies interested are able to come to some agreement on this point it would doubtless facilitate Hie building of the new bridge.—lt was uo-
cided that the ldorowhenua County Council be written to asking them to call a conlerence of the local bodies Interested. From the IPublie Works Department stating that the samples oi rock forwarded for testing are not -fitih as will enable a test to be made of the rock. It was resolved that the council would not object to tlie writer selling the property subject to the purchaser being 7 approved of by the council. RUBBISH .TIP. Mr J. W. Huggins, Health Inspector, reported that he had inspected the suggested site for a rubbish tip on Mr Hook’s property, Grey' Street, and was sorry that he could not recommend it as 'suitable for the purpose. The greatest advantage this site had was its centrality, hut- he was certain • that this would turn into a serious disadvantage in a year or so. This site was or soon would be, • practically surrounded with bouses and the almost inevitable fly and rat nuisance would be a serious menace to them. Again, any drainage or soakage from the tip would find its way into the natural watercourse which meanders through the centre of Shannon. He further thought that the excellent building sites in this locality would remain empty building sites if a rubhisli tip. was established near them. Different sites were suggested by councillors, hut no finality was come to and on the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the matter he left, to the Road Committee to look into. ROADMAN’S REPORT.
