HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
SEPTEMBER MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Horowlienua County Council was held on Saturday, the chairman, Mr G. A. Monk, presiding, and Crs. Barber, Whyte, Bryant, Harkness, Broadbelt, Catley and Jensen being present. Leave of absence was granted Cr. Ryder. RANGITANE—TOKOMARU ROAD. On behalf of Ashlea, Ltd., and others, application was made to release the applicants from part of a, covenant made to form and complete the Raiigitane-Tokomaru (roqjd running round the sub-divisions of the Ashlea Estate. A special rating area had been formed lor making the road, but only up to a point about one chain past the boundary of Lots 1 and 2 of the Ashlea Block. It was the formation of the additional piece beyond that point that, It was desired to dispense with. The chairman said the applicants and Council had entered into an agreement and dedicated these roads and they could not escape from that. The matter could be subject to negotiation, but in tlie meantime the Council could not agree to waive the covenant. GENERAL. Mr H. S. Coles in’ thanking the County for constructing a watertable in Gladstone Road, asked file County to grant him sufficient timber to construct a culvert at his front entrance.—Granted on Cr. Broadbelt’s motion. From the Secretary of the W.E.A., enclosing a report of last year’s operations.—Report laid on the table. Messrs Coley Bros., Shannon, asking whether Mr Spiers had received permission to put a tram line over the main bridge over the Tokoniaru stream (Kingston Road West), as they, Coley Bros., were of the opinion that it was unsafe for people to drive on to.—Referred to Cr. Barber and the Engineer, it being stated that the construction of the line had been stopped in the meantime. - HEIGHTS ROAD.
Mr R. •J. Law, of Shannon, waited on the Council and said be was now interested in the property served by the Heights Road, which was in a very bad state of repair, being almost impassable, having slipped away in places. He had had to undertake to improve the. property within a certain period. To do this he would need to be able to gat implements and carts up to» the property. Speaking for the owners of the other property there, Messrs Robbie Bros., and himself, they would like to know whether the Council could do anything as they would be getting the rates from these properties now. The chairman said the Council had lost three or four years’ general rates on these properties. They had received some money from the Land Board, but that had been spent before it was received. The County could not spend money that it had not got. The position was a very difficult one; but the Council was very glad to know that the property had been taken up and was likely tb pay rates again. The Council would give the matter very careful consideration and see what could be done. Mr I,aw said he would see what could be done to . obtain labour, and the chairman stated the Engineer would meet him and discuss what was most urgent.
