SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tile monthly meeting oi the .Shannon School Committee was held in the Schoolroom on Thursday evening. Present—Messrs R. L.. Tippler (chairman), J. V. Burns, W. Brown, Braun, Watkins, Phillips, and Roberts, and the headmaster (Mr White). An apology for absence was received from Mr Blackwood, who later attended. CORRESPONDENCE. Notification was received from the Board of the appointment of Mr E. S. Burchett to fill the temporary vacancy on die teaching staff. Mr U. Gustofsen, a member of the Committee, wrote tendering his resignation owing to leaving the district. The resignation was received with regret, the Committee expressing its appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Gustofsen. The secretary reported having received the sum of £2 7s towards the school piano fund, being the school’s share lrorn the proceeds of a fancy dress ball held by the Shannon Football Club. —The Club is to- -be thanked for their donation. SUBSIDIES.
On the question qf subsidies from the Board in respect to school improvements, which have been held up for some time, Mr Burns reported that lie had interviewed the secretary of the Board, and after going into the matter fully, the whole of the outstanding subsidies, with the exception of the subsidy for the playing apparatus, have now been cleaned up, and it was recommended that the question of the latter should be reopened with the Department. Within the lust few days a cheque for £2O lias been received as a subsidy on the playing apparatus, leaving" a balance of £SB, which amount the Department have declined tot .pay up to date, they contending that Shannon’s claim came before them' after March 31st, 1924, when the new regulation allowing only £2O per year subsidy for playing apparatus came into force. The Committee installed the apparatus before that date and were under the impression, they would receive £1 for £1 subsidy. After’ discussion it was decided to write to the Board asking that the question of the apparatus subsidy be re-opened. HEADMASTER’S REPORT.
The headmaster (Mr White) reported that the average attendance for the past, four w'feeks was:—3sß.B, 352.6,' 354.3. and 344, the roll number being 374. He said the attendance on the whole 'had been good, the majority of absentees being away, owing to illness. Additions Were being made almost every day, and the roll number next month would probably be over 380. GENERAL. On the motion of Mr Brown it was decided to make representations to the Board to have the asphalt yards top-dressed during the holidays. Regarding the vacancy on the Committee owing tot 'Mr Gustofsen’s resigning, it was decided to write to Mr Lanksliear asking him to fill the vacancy. Mr Lanksliear, at the election, polled next, to the committee elected. It was resolved that a letter or thanks be forwarded to Mrs Phillips thanking her l'or her initial effort in raising funds for the purchase' of a. piano for the school. Accounts were then passed for payment.
