OBITUARY.

MR ARTHUR JAMIESON, OF .TOKOMARU. There passed away at liis. residence, Tokomaru, on Wednesday evening, the 2nd inst,, after a lingering illness and at the' comparatively early age of 62, an old and highly respected settler of the district, in the person of Mr Arthur Jamieson. The deceased gentleman, who was a native of the Parish of Lerwick, in the Shetland Isles, emigrated from Scotland to the Dominion, with his parents when a lad of 14. With the exception of a few years spent in the Itangitikei district, where his parents first settled, lie spent his days in Tokomaru. Taking up ground and having cleared a portion of the section on which the homestead now stands he built the first whare iii the district over 40 years ago. .. , , Throughout liis life he manifested a deep Interest ip religious matters and chiefly through his efforts the first services of this nature were held in Tokomaru. He was one of the founders and an elder of the Presbyterian Church and until the end of the illness which unfortunately proved his last, a faithful and zealous member. Though naturally of a retiring disposition and shunning publicity of any kind he was keenly interested in ‘local, affairs and all that tended to the welfare of the community. The funeral services at the home and at ‘Palmerston North cemetery was largely atended by relatives and friends, and were conducted by the Rev. A. F. Stewart, who on Sunday at. the church services made appropriate and feeling reference to the iiigh Christian character of the deceased and the great loss they as a Church had sustained. The late ;Mr Jamieson is survived by liis wife, son and two daughters, to whom the sympathy of a large circle of. friends go out.
