RUGBY MATTERS.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The usual weekly meeting of the Management Committee qf the Horowhenua Rugby Union was. held last Tuesday. Present; Messrs Robinson, Frechthng, Dalzell, Peters, Austin, Anderson, Sloan, Hannan, Carmichael, McMillan (in the chair). Mr Robinson said that Mr Proud, secretary of the combined Union, had suggested that there was some likelihood of a match between Kia Toa and Wanderers taking place at Levin and he (Mr Robinson) thought perhaps the match between the referees of Manawatu and Horowhenua Unions might be played as a curtain raiser.
■ The suggestion did not meet with the approval of the referees’ representative, Mr Sloan, who considered the referees’ match would attract, of its -own accord, a record gate. (Laughter). ‘ The Committee resolved that delegates from this Union should endeavour to definitely arrange a date for the Kia Toa—Wanderers fixture. The meeting was advised that a well-known firm had offered to donate a cup, to be played for between the top teams in each Union, and it was considered that such a trophy would prove very acceptable, and one which would be a fine stimulus to good football. On account of tlie races at Otaki on September ’ 19th, it was decided not to hold any matches on that date. As the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup had been donated in the Otaki district it was considered desirable to hold the final match at Otaki. It was recommended that the Referees match be plaved on the 26th September, on which date ’ all Senior matches will be off.
The committeei resolved that it be a recommendation to. the delegates at the next meeting of the combined union committee to raise the question off arranging an annual match between the winners of the senior grade competition in both districts, the fixture to be played alternately on heme and away grounds. a\lr Dalzell said that at the forthcoming annual. general meeting of the Combined Unions a new club, to be known as the Northern Club,’’ comprising a senior, junior and tiii-rd grade team would be nominated. This proposed new club would absorb- the present Linton and Tokomaru Clubs and would play in Horowhenua.
