it was a lamentable fact that many traders and farmers never took out a proper statement of position or balance sheet, and if the Accountants Society could instil into the business and farming community the need for more accurate accounting m then respective fields of operation, it would have more than justified its existence, remarked Mr T. S. Goldsmith, m the course of a lecture at Hawera. If manv of. the farmers who were at present struggling on higinpncea land had consulted accounts, or relied on the advice of their hankers before purchasing tlieir farms, a goodly number would have been wiser arid wealthier men. Mr E. Dixon recalled an instance when-, during his term of office in Parliament, he had conwith a farmer who had mentioned paying £IOO income tax Ai hearing the circumstances Mr Dixon said he thought the man had no need to pav any income tax, a n<l a d vised him to consult -an accountant. The result was that the farmer later discovered he had been paying tax which he had no need to pay .-Hawera Star.
