THE WORST ROAD IN NEW ZEALAND.
WHERE IS IT? (To the Editor.) Sir, —I notice this evening in a Palmerston North paper some severe criticism of a main highway in Hmvkes Bay. It was so bad that an ambulance had to make a det-our of fourteen miles. The road must be bad, but I doubt if it is any worse than the piece between Makerua and Shannon. We have 1 heard from time to time that it is going to be put in order and I notice that a start lias been made, but at ilie present rate of progress it will be a long time before the road is repaired. That any local body should allow a main, road to get- into such a bad state is more than the average man can understand. I am a farmer and have a car. I pa.v car tax, rates and tyre tax and voted for the loan for highways recently. I, with, others, do i.ot object, to pav if we get the goods, but it seems‘we have 1.0, pay and get nothing. I pass oyer the piece of road about three times a week and until to-day have never seen a. man repairing it. And as for a grader, it is unheaTd of. On the journey to Palmerston North the contrast between the Hiorowhenua County roads and those of the adjoining county is very marked. It, seems apparent that the* interest of those in the northern end of our County is being neglected and it behoves us to put men on the Council at next- election that will at, least see that our roads arc decently maintained. —I am. etc., THICKEN SPRINGS. Shannon. September 7.
