DISSATISFIED SEAMEN.
FORM A NEW UNION. AUSTRALIAN STATES TO ACT. (Received This Day, 11.25va.m.) SYDNEY, August 27. The most important decision arrived at by the mass meeting of British seamen was that a new organisation be formed. A president, secretary and executive were appointed to control its affairs. MELBOURNE, Aug. 27. Mr Bruce announced that he had received replies to the request for the •protection of British sailors desiring to work from all the States, except New South Wales and West Australia. The Victorian reply says the Government is fully seized of the seriousness of the position and will be quite prepared to co-operate with the Commonwealth Government in endeavouring to, cope with it in every possible way. The Queensland Government replied: "Your wire respecting seamen's strike received." South Australia says: "There is no intimidation of British seamen in South Australia. The Government will take all necessary steps to prevent a breach - of the peace." Tasmania says: "Should the trouble unfortunately spread to this State the Government l will take .any action necessary or desirable as circumstances arise:" The Victorian branch of the Watersiders' Federation has assured ship owners that no ships will be held up in Melbourne by its members. It is 'reported- that the Federal Executive is issuing instructions to this effect and also to the Adelaide and Fre- ■ mantle branches.
